For these acts of defiance of all law, and
for the contempt of Court, the Deemster imposed
on him a fine of 50*l*. and twelve months' impri-
sonment. Warrants for the apprehension of this
man, and of a few others, were lodged in the
hands of constables, but on account of the gene-
ral state of insubordination, and the absence of
any military force in the Island, these could not
be executed.

In the mean time arrived his Grace, who had,
during the riots, happened to be absent; and
also a company of foot from Liverpool.

Among his Grace's first acts was the sending
for the High Constable, in whose hands the war-
rant against Shimmin was placed. Him his Grace
threatened with dismission from his office, for his
endeavour to apprehend the criminal. Next, he
obtained possession of the warrants, and indorsed
on that against Shimmin, "I hereby suspend the
execution of the within judgment, Athol." On
that against Cannel, another ringleader, "I here-
by suspend the execution of this warrant, Athol."
A third rioter named Siddleton, being appre-
hended, tried, and found guilty, was, by his
Grace's order, brought up in a Chancery Court,
which, as his Grace was at the time warned, has
no jurisdiction in the matter. To this man his
Grace addressed the following words: "I par-
don you: go about your business." By these
