Prince Albert of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha (1819-1861), consort of Queen Victoria.

His one direct connection with the Island is the visit of September 1847. The royal yacht lay in Ramsey Bay and the Queen did not land, but the Prince Consort came ashore and ascended the hill overlooking the town and the bay on 20 September. The Albert Tower was afterwards built on that spot to commemorate the royal visit, and it is how the occasion is remembered at Ramsey.

He lent his name to antiquarian work of the kind that produced much of the surrounding record. He was patron of the Irish Archaeological Society, founded in 1840, whose editions of the Irish genealogies, tribes and customs are among the comparative sources used for the Norse and Gaelic centuries of Manx history.
