The site of a lead mine has been recorded in this area and was operating in 1850. The mine lay on the east bank of the River Glass opposite Baldwin hamlet. An early level was driven by the Isle of Man (Foxdale) Mining Company before being abandoned; shaft sinking was attempted in 1850-55, and the Baldwin Mining Company, Limited began working the site in earnest from 1862. By 1867 the shaft had reached 66 fathoms, with a 42-fathom south level extended 140 fathoms by 1868, and a further 77-fathom level driven in 1871 proved disappointing. By 1873 around £20,000 had been spent on the venture against ore sales of only £168 3s 3d, and the company's capital was exhausted by 1872.
