Edward VIII (1894-1972), King of the United Kingdom and Lord of Mann for less than a year in 1936 before his abdication. He visited the Isle of Man during his brief reign.

The abdication gave sudden importance to a piece of constitutional machinery that had been settled five years earlier. The preamble to the Statute of Westminster of 1931 had laid down that any alteration in the law touching the succession to the throne or the royal style and titles required the assent of the parliaments of the Dominions as well as of the United Kingdom, and the events of December 1936 were the first occasion on which those rules had to be worked. The abdication was given effect by the Declaration of Abdication Act.
