There is a supposition that St Maughold's parish church stands on the site of an Iron Age or Roman fort. No evidence of such a fort has been confirmed. The churchyard is, however, well attested as the site of a seventh-century Celtic monastery, containing three keeill ruins and a crosshouse holding nearly a third of the Island's pre-Norse cross slabs; the present parish church itself dates largely from the 11th-12th centuries.
