The Red House on Victoria Road, Douglas, was built in 1893 as the family home of the architect and designer Mackay Hugh Baillie Scott, one of the leading figures of the Arts and Crafts movement, who spent twelve formative years living and working on the Isle of Man. He had earlier set up his own architectural practice at 23 Athol Street in Douglas before designing this house for himself and his family. It stands among a wider body of Baillie Scott work on the Island, which also includes the Groudle Glen Hotel, the model farm at Bishopscourt, and other Douglas houses such as Ivydene and Oakleigh.
