This Athol Street building began life in 1841 as a hall for the Oddfellows friendly society, its front distinguished by large square Corinthian columns supporting a portico beneath a balustraded roofline. It was then run for some years as a theatre, under the management of Mr James Rogers of the Hanley theatrical circuit, before being taken over in 1860 to serve as the Island's principal courthouse, also hosting sittings of Tynwald and the House of Keys before those bodies moved to Prospect Hill. It also functioned as a police station and, until the 1970s, held juvenile offenders in cells on its top floor under conditions later remembered as Victorian in character. The courthouse function moved to a new building on Buck's Road in 1996, and the old building has since been redeveloped as a bar, restaurant and nightclub, with its historic facade retained.
