Ballure Chapel stands within the ancient Treen of Ballure, on the site of one of the early Christian "Kiels" that predate the Island's formal parish churches, and is generally referred to as Ballure or Ramsey Chapel, though it has also been called St Catherine's. In 1712, the occupants of the Treen's quarterlands, together with the inhabitants of Ramsey, were assessed to keep the chapel in repair, and it was lengthened to 61 feet in 1743. As Ramsey's population grew in the early nineteenth century the chapel could no longer hold the congregation, leading to the construction of St Paul's Church in the town in 1822. Ballure's graveyard was traditionally used as a "potter's field" for the burial of strangers, while long-established Ramsey families continued to bury their dead at their older parish churches.
