This former engine room on Carrs Lane, Tromode, belonged to Clucas' Laundry, a firm that began in a house on Circular Road, Douglas, in 1906 before moving to Tromode in 1912 and becoming a private company in 1922, when it acquired the whole of Tromode Village and Mills; the site had formerly been used for making Moore's sail cloth. Clucas' grew into one of the largest and best-equipped laundries in the United Kingdom, running a substantial brush-making factory alongside it, and was noted as the only laundry company in the British Isles to provide housing for its entire workforce, owning every house in the village its employees lived in. The engine room is a surviving fragment of that industrial operation, now included on the Isle of Man's Registered Buildings list.
