The Smelt Memorial on The Parade, known locally as 'the candlestick', was erected by public subscription to honour Cornelius Smelt, the first royally-appointed Lieutenant Governor of the Isle of Man, following his death in 1832. Designed by architect John Welch as a column of the Grecian Doric order built from locally-sourced stone at a cost of £180, work began in 1836 and finished the following year. Smelt was greatly popular with the Manx people, and the monument remains the only one of its kind erected to a Lieutenant Governor; it stands on a site formerly occupied by an ancient market cross, and has been a registered building since 1984.
