This toll gate house on Marine Drive, Port Soderick, stands at the site once known simply as "Tollgate," one of the four main stops on the cliff-top Marine Drive tramway that opened in 1896 and ran between Douglas Head and Port Soderick. The Douglas Head Marine Drive Company, which owned the scenic clifftop roadway, originally charged a toll of a penny per passenger plus a share of takings from traffic passing this point, making the gate house a working part of Victorian Douglas's tourist infrastructure. The tramway itself closed after the Second World War and was largely dismantled by 1955, but this building survives as a relic of that era.
