The Douglas Swing Bridge crosses the harbour at South Quay and was built in 1895 by Sir W. G. Armstrong-Mitchell & Co. Ltd of Newcastle-upon-Tyne, at a cost of £6,590. The bridge weighed some 450 tons and measured 176 feet long by 24 feet wide, with a footpath along one side, and it originally operated as a toll bridge, replacing an earlier swing bridge referred to in guidebooks from the 1870s. It remains a working link across Douglas Harbour and a reminder of the town's Victorian engineering heritage.
