Old Kirk Braddan stands on a site associated with Christian worship for around fourteen centuries, with fragments from an early Celtic keeill (chapel) on the site dated to around 400 AD. The present building was largely rebuilt in 1777 after the earlier church was reported unsafe and too small for the parish, though surveys have shown that much of the surviving fabric, including the walls, dates from the twelfth century. Unusually, it escaped Victorian restoration and still retains its original box pews, gallery and three-decker pulpit. Its churchyard holds a notable collection of ancient Celtic crosses, and the church served as Douglas's parish church until a new church was built nearby in 1876.
