The Witches Mill, on Arbory Road, is regarded as the Isle of Man's oldest surviving windmill; a mill on the site is recorded in a court document as early as 1611. It takes its name from the Arbory witches said to have lived nearby, and folklore holds that after the original mill burned out in 1848, its round stone shell was used by them as a dancing ground. In 1950 the mill's outbuildings were taken over by Gerald Gardner, founder of the modern Wiccan movement, to house what was billed as the world's only museum devoted to magic and witchcraft, making the site a genuine focal point in the emergence of twentieth-century Wicca. It has since been converted into a four-storey holiday cottage.
