Castletown railway station, on Victoria Road, opened on 1 August 1874 as part of the Isle of Man Railway's narrow-gauge line linking Douglas with the south of the Island. Its Victorian buildings were extended over time, with a canopy and veranda added in 1901, the goods shed rebuilt in 1902, and a livestock platform added in 1910. The line closed in 1965-66 before reopening for seasonal heritage running from 1967, and the station itself was restored in 1994; today it is the busiest of the railway's intermediate stops, serving as the gateway to several of the south's visitor attractions.
