Westwood, on The Crofts, was built in the early 1840s on land bought by the notable Manx architect Thomas Brine, who died in an accident in Castletown Square in 1840; it is thought possible, though not certain, that Brine designed the house himself before his death. Ownership passed through several hands across the nineteenth century, including a period from 1865 in which it belonged to Charlotte Woods, widow of Balladoole. The house presents an imposing symmetrical façade to The Crofts, set behind cast-iron railings, with Victorian sliding-sash windows and a columned entrance portico, and together with neighbouring Elderbank and Crofton it forms a recognised architectural group within the Castletown Conservation Area.
