The Old Station on Station Road was built as Kirk Michael's stop on the Manx Northern Railway, opening on 23 September 1879 partway along the line between St John's and Ramsey; as the largest village on that stretch, Kirk Michael had been intended from the line's 1877 survey as a principal intermediate station and passing place, and it was given substantial sandstone, slate-roofed buildings comprising a stationmaster's office, waiting room, goods shed and water tower. The station remained in use for nearly ninety years, closing on 6 September 1968. Since 1981 the former station building has housed the local fire brigade, with the goods shed converted to garage the fire engine, while mock level-crossing gates and lengths of rail set into the road recall its railway past along the Heritage Rail Trail.
