This is the boathouse of Port Erin's RNLI lifeboat station, on Breakwater Road. The RNLI approved a station for Port Erin in 1882 after local requests, and it formally opened in 1883, its first lifeboat, the Ann and Mary of Manchester, funded by a legacy from Richard Roberts of Blackley, Manchester, and blessed by the Lieutenant Governor before her first launch. An initial boathouse went up in 1884, with a slipway added in 1900 to ease launches. The building seen today dates from 1925, the same year a motor-powered lifeboat arrived at the station, and it is noted for having the steepest boathouse slipway of any RNLI station, at a 1-in-4 gradient. It was extended in 1996 and its slipway remodelled again in 2006 to accommodate a newer Atlantic-class inshore lifeboat.
