This North Quay building was home to the Lake Brewery, founded in 1779 by George Booth and later taken on by John Williams Clinch III, who rented it from 1863 and owned it by around 1868, trading as Clinch & Co. The firm was known by two Manx Gaelic mottoes, "Glen as Lajer" (Clean and Strong) and "Three Fists," and Clinch remained managing director until his death in 1905, having earlier been forced to float the business under pressure from its bankers in the 1890s. The brewery traded on into the twentieth century before being absorbed by the Castletown Brewery in 1945 and closing the following year; the surviving quayside building today holds offices, shops and a public house, reflecting its old commercial and drinking-house use.
