Maughold Lighthouse stands on Maughold Head, becoming operational on 15 April 1914. It was designed by the Stevenson brothers, David Alan and Charles Alexander Stevenson, members of the celebrated family of Scottish lighthouse engineers, and rises as a 23-metre masonry tower with a focal height of about 65 metres above the sea, taking full advantage of the headland's height. Its fog signal was deactivated in 1987 and the light itself was automated in 1993, after which the former keepers' cottages were converted into holiday accommodation; the tower is still maintained and operated by the Northern Lighthouse Board.
