This obelisk memorial within the grounds of the Nunnery is generally regarded as the Isle of Man's earliest war memorial, commemorating Brigadier General Thomas Leigh Goldie, who was killed at the Battle of Inkerman in the Crimean War in 1854. A captured Russian gun was originally displayed in front of the obelisk; the obelisk itself was later damaged by a falling tree and has since been reconstructed, with sections remaining within the Nunnery grounds today. It has stood on the site for well over a century as a rare Manx monument to the Crimean War.
