The National War Memorial stands on the Main Road at St John's, at the centre of the Isle of Man's ceremonial and parliamentary village. It was inaugurated in 1923. Each Tynwald Day, 5 July, the Lieutenant Governor lays a wreath at the memorial as part of the day's formal proceedings, before the annual open-air sitting of Tynwald, the Island's parliament, convenes nearby on Tynwald Hill, making it a focal point along the route of one of the Island's oldest continuous public ceremonies.
