This former keeper's cottage sits high on Douglas Head, one of the Isle of Man's most dramatic coastal viewpoints. An earlier lighthouse on the headland dated from 1832, and after the Northern Lighthouse Board took over the station a new lighthouse was built in 1892; an additional keeper's dwelling, engine room and fog signal turret were added around this period. By the late nineteenth century Douglas had become a popular holiday resort and the lighthouse itself drew so many visitors that keepers had to restrict public viewing to set hours around the middle of the day so they could still carry out their duties. The keeper's cottages were later sold off and are now in private ownership.
