Milntown, on the outskirts of Ramsey, was for centuries the seat of the powerful Christian family, whose standing in Manx affairs was already established by 1408, when a charter names John McCrystyn as Deemster. The present mansion dates only from the 1750s, replacing an earlier ruined house nearby, and was substantially remodelled after Deemster John Christian returned to live there in 1830. Following the death of William Bell Christian in 1886 the house passed through use as a private school and then a hotel before the wider estate, including its old mill, mill pond and mill race, was registered as a protected building in 1997; it is now run by the Milntown Trust as one of the island's few stately-home visitor attractions, with its historic gardens open to the public.
