The Golden Meadow Mill, on Alexandra Road, is believed to be the earliest town mill on the Island and one of the first "Lord's Mills", first documented in the Manorial Roll of 1511-1515 as "two grain mills near the Castle", with William Hubart recorded as tenant. Its mill leat runs down to Castle Rushen itself, and the castle is visible on a direct line from the mill's wheels, underlining the close historical relationship between the two sites. Unusually, the mill had two water wheels side by side, one driving the corn mill and the other a separate threshing mill, and its four-storey limestone building still stands with a drying kiln in an attached extension. It remained in use until 1981, when deterioration of the wheel and the sale of its machinery finally brought milling here to an end; the site has since been restored and converted to holiday accommodation.
