St John's Church, on Main Road, is the Royal Chapel of St John the Baptist, from which the village of St John's takes its name, standing immediately beside Tynwald Hill. It serves as the Island's national civic church: each Tynwald Day, 5 July, a religious service is held in the chapel at 11 o'clock as the opening act of the day's ceremonies, before proceedings move outdoors to Tynwald Hill for the promulgation of the year's laws in English and Manx. Inside, reserved seats bearing name plaques are set aside for members of both branches of Tynwald, the Manx parliament, reflecting the church's continuing role in the Island's system of government alongside its ordinary parish duties.
