Old Kirk Lonan, also known as Lonan Old Church or St Adamnan's, stands on Ballamenagh Road near Baldrine on the Island's east coast, between Groudle Glen and the shore. Its Manx name, Keeill ny-Traie, means "the chapel by the shore," and the site holds early Celtic crosses, the oldest reputedly dating to the 5th century AD, pointing to a very early Christian presence; the church itself is dedicated to Adomnán, Abbot of Iona between 679 and 704. Around 1190, King Reginald is recorded as having granted land, likely including this site, to St Bees Priory in Cumbria. The old kirk was superseded as the parish's main place of worship after an Act of Tynwald in 1733 provided for a new church at Boilley Veen, though it was later restored by the Reverend John Quine after he became vicar in 1895, and the Friends of St Adamnan's, formed in 1968, have maintained it since. It remains a registered protected building on the Isle of Man.
