Thomas Nigel Kneale (18 April 1922 - 29 October 2006) was a screenwriter raised on the Isle of Man (educated at Douglas High School) and declared Manxman of the Year in 1957, best known for creating the BBC science-fiction character Professor Bernard Quatermass. He won the Somerset Maugham Award in 1950 for a short-story collection before moving into television, where his Quatermass serials of the 1950s were hugely influential on British science fiction and horror. His brother, Bryan Kneale, was a noted sculptor also born in Douglas.
