John Miller Nicholson (29 January 1840 - 1913) was a Douglas-born painter, apprenticed as a house-painter and decorator in his father's business, who became regarded as the Isle of Man's leading Victorian artist. His meticulous pencil sketches of Douglas shore at sunrise, annotated with time, date and weather notes, drew the admiration of critic John Ruskin, who purchased several and compared his talent to Turner's. He continued in the family decorating trade throughout his life while amassing a substantial body of work now held largely by the Manx Museum.
