William Cashen (1838-1912) was a Manx-speaking fisherman born in Dalby who, after being shipwrecked in Peel Bay and nursed back to health there, settled in Peel as a herring-fishing skipper, later serving nineteen years as assistant harbour master and then seventeen years as custodian of Peel Castle. Encouraged by Sophia Morrison and the Manx Language Society, he recorded his own notes on Manx folklore and folk life in an old ledger, which Morrison edited and published shortly after his death as William Cashen's Manx Folk-lore (1912), a key source for Manx oral tradition.
