Robert Henry 'Tim' Cain (2 January 1909 - 2 May 1974) was born in Shanghai to Manx parents who returned to the Isle of Man during his childhood, and was educated at King William's College. Serving with the South Staffordshire Regiment's 1st Airborne Division at the Battle of Arnhem in September 1944, he fought German tanks and self-propelled guns at close range for six days despite serious wounds, and was awarded the Victoria Cross - the only Manxman ever to receive the medal. He retired to the Isle of Man in 1965, is buried at Braddan Cemetery, and is commemorated by a memorial scholarship at King William's College and an oak grown from an Arnhem acorn in the Dhoon Arboretum.
