George Rayner Hoff (27 November 1894 - 19 November 1937) was born in the parish of Braddan, the son of an English-born wood and stone carver, before his family relocated to Nottingham during his childhood. After studying at the Royal College of Art and winning the British Prix de Rome in 1922, he emigrated to Australia, where his World War One trench experience shaped his acclaimed Art Deco war memorial sculpture, including the ANZAC War Memorial figures in Sydney's Hyde Park (1931-34) and the King George V Memorial in Canberra.
