Christopher David Killip (11 July 1946 - 13 October 2020) was born in Douglas, where his parents ran the Highlander pub, and left school at 16 to work as a beach photographer before moving to London in 1964. He returned repeatedly to document the Island, publishing Isle of Man: A Book about the Manx (1980) with text by critic John Berger, before becoming internationally recognised for In Flagrante (1988), his study of Tyneside's working-class communities, which won him the 1989 Henri Cartier-Bresson Award; he later taught photography at Harvard University from 1991 to 2017.
