Voyage of Odin's Raven, 1979

Event

Odin's Raven, a two-thirds scale replica of the Gokstad Viking ship, was sailed roughly 1,500 miles from Trondheim, Norway to Peel by a joint Manx and Norwegian crew of 16 as part of the 1979 Manx Millennium celebrations, conceived by businessman Robin Bigland. Setting out on 27 May 1979 and capsizing briefly off Skye en route, the longship arrived in Peel on 5 July 1979, Tynwald Day, to mark Tynwald's thousandth year. The vessel is now displayed at the House of Manannan in Peel.
