'Arrane Ashoonagh dy Vannin' ('O Land of Our Birth'), the Manx national anthem, was written and composed by William Henry Gill (1839-1923), set to an adaptation of the traditional Manx air 'Mylecharaine's March', with a Manx Gaelic translation by John J. Kneen. Gill, a collector of Manx folk music schooled at King William's College alongside poet T.E. Brown, wrote the English lyrics himself after Brown died before completing them. The anthem was first performed at the Manx Music Festival on 21 March 1907, but was not given official status by Tynwald until 22 January 2003, alongside 'God Save the King' as the royal anthem.
