On 28 February 1760, a Royal Navy squadron under Captain John Elliot (HMS Aeolus, HMS Pallas and HMS Brilliant) decisively defeated a French privateering squadron under François Thurot off Jurby Head, in sight of the Isle of Man, during the Seven Years' War; Thurot was killed and all three French frigates captured, with French losses far exceeding the five killed and 31 wounded on the British side. The battle followed Thurot's raid on Carrickfergus, Ireland, and is commemorated at Bishopscourt by the Mount Aeolus memorial, built with two cannons and the bowsprit of the French flagship Maréchal de Belle-Isle, which washed ashore nearby.
