Chicken Rock (Manx: Carrick ny Kirkey) is a low, largely submerged reef 4.5 km south-west of Spanish Head, marking the southernmost point administered by the Isle of Man. According to a contemporary account reproduced in later retellings, at least 70 shipwrecks and 160 deaths occurred on the island's southern shores between 1822 and 1867 (this specific figure could not be independently confirmed against the Northern Lighthouse Board's own records or Manx Notebook, and should be treated as an unverified period claim rather than an established statistic); in response, the Northern Lighthouse Board's engineers David and Thomas Stevenson built a 44-metre tower directly on the rock, with the final stone laid 6 June 1873 and the light first shown on 1 January 1875, replacing two earlier leading lights on the nearby Calf of Man. The rock is exposed above water for only about five hours a day, making its construction one of the most hazardous lighthouse-building projects of the Victorian era.
