The Sound (Manx: Yn Cheyllys), also called Calf Sound, is the roughly 700-yard-wide tidal strait separating the southern tip of the Isle of Man from the Calf of Man, with the islet of Kitterland sitting amid its racing currents. The name Calf derives from the Old Norse 'kalfr,' meaning a small island lying close to a larger one. Strong tidal races run through the Sound -- the north-going tide begins about ninety minutes before high water at Dover -- and its waters are rich in seals, dolphins and seabirds, viewed today from the Sound Visitor Centre and Café on the clifftop above.
