Spanish Head is a dramatic promontory on the south-western coast of the Isle of Man, rising sheer from the sea about 6 km south-west of Port St Mary, opposite the Calf of Man. A persistent local legend claims the headland is named for a wrecked ship of the Spanish Armada, but no wreck evidence exists and the Armada's route never came near the Irish Sea; Kneen's 1925 Place-Names of the Isle of Man (the standard Manx toponymy reference) and Mate's 1902 guide both simply record the name as 'Kioney Spaainey' (with an older map form 'Esparolet'/'Spaloret') and treat the Armada story as unverified tradition, without offering a firm alternative etymology.
