A 683-metre (2,241 ft) iron pier built for the Isle of Man Harbour Board between 1882 and 1886, designed by Sir John Coode and constructed by Head Wrightson of Stockton-on-Tees at a cost of GBP40,752. Officially opened on 22 July 1886, it served as a landing stage allowing Steam Packet ships to embark and disembark passengers at low tide. Sources disagree on when regular use ended: most accounts (Wikipedia included) give 1990 as the closure date, but the Isle of Man Government's own harbours page states the pier 'was last used in 1970' - this discrepancy is unresolved and worth checking before publishing a specific date. The pier has been under phased restoration since 2016, with the first sections reopened to the public in 2021.
