Kirk Maughold churchyard, on the site of an early Christian monastery predating Rushen Abbey with the remains of four keeills, houses the largest collection of early Manx carved stone crosses in one place. Its covered Cross House, opened in 1906, contains 38 crosses spanning over 700 years, including the oldest Manx cross slab, a stone bearing both ogham and runic inscriptions, a rare Viking ship carving, and the Pillar Cross - the only surviving parish cross on the Island and the earliest stone-carved depiction of the three legs of Mann. The site is named after St Maughold, the Island's patron saint.
