Union Mills is a village in the parish of Braddan on the road between Douglas and Peel, recorded as early as 1511 under the name 'Mullin Doway' (the mill on the black ford). Its present name derives from the combination of a corn mill and a cloth mill added in 1807 by William Kelly, trading as 'Flail and Fleece United', a firm that even issued its own five-shilling promissory notes. The Dalrymple Maitland Memorial Hall in the village commemorates 2nd Lieutenant John Dalrymple Maitland, killed at Ypres in 1916, the son of Dalrymple Maitland, Speaker of the House of Keys 1909-1919.
