The wider Laxey mining valley beyond the Great Wheel itself, encompassing the Welsh, Dumbell's and Engine shafts, the ore-dressing Washing Floors, and the mine buildings that once employed hundreds. Mining began around 1782 and the complex became one of the richest lead, zinc, silver and copper workings in the British Isles before closing in 1929.
