A zinc, lead and silver mine on the slopes of Snaefell, worked from 1856 to 1908 as part of the Great Laxey mining empire, reaching a depth of over 1,180 feet. It is remembered above all for the Isle of Man's worst mining disaster: on 10 May 1897 an underground fire, started by a miner's candle left against timbering, filled the workings with carbon monoxide and killed twenty men. Mine captain John Kewley was decorated for his rescue efforts.
