Moore's Traditional Curers (Kipper Yard), Peel
Place
Moore's kipper yard on Mill Road beside the River Neb in Peel was the Isle of Man's last traditional herring smokehouse, oak-smoking kippers by the same chimney-curing method since the 1880s until it closed in September 2023 after around 140 years in business. Herring landed by Peel's fishing fleet were split, brined and hung over smouldering oak sawdust in tall brick smoking chimneys, a process also recreated in the House of Manannan's Victorian street scene nearby.
