Patrick Cannell, Wesleyan local preacher, who emigrated from the Isle of Man to Ohio in 1827 at the age of seventy-two.

He sailed in the ship Ocean with something like a hundred and twenty-nine other Manx people, among them John Sayle, another local preacher.

The year he went was the year the movement became a migration. The first Manx families reached the Cleveland district in 1826, three of them with seven children between them, and in 1827 something like seventy families, about two hundred people in all, arrived in Ohio. The settlements they made kept their Manx character for generations, and a Manx Society was founded at Cleveland in 1851 to look after immigrants from the Island who arrived with an empty pocket or in feeble health.

That a man of seventy-two should have gone at all says something about what was driving them. The Island in the middle 1820s was in the middle of the distress that followed the fall in prices after 1816, and the tithe agitation under Bishop Murray fell on the poorer farmers hardest.
