Parish on the north-east coast of the Isle of Man, in the sheading of Garff with Lonan.

The parish takes its name from Maughold, whose legend is given in the earliest of the Manx Society volumes. He was said to have been a captain of robbers in Ireland who was cast ashore on the Island in a small leathern boat, his hands manacled and bolts on his feet, having undertaken the voyage as a penance. Conindrius and Romulus, the bishops sent by St Patrick, received him. He was afterwards elected bishop by the universal suffrage of the Manx nation, and by whom he was consecrated is uncertain. A Manx ballad printed in 1873 records that he came ashore at the Head and built a church there.

The churchyard holds some of the best of the Island's carved stones. At the gate stands a large uninscribed pillar known as St Maughold's Cross, on which the three legs are carved, and which was the reputed sanctuary for criminals. During repairs to the old parish church in the 1850s several further crosses and fragments were found built into the west gable and used as lintels in the chancel, and another was taken from the bell turret. The Cambrian Archaeological Association was shown them in August 1865.

St Maughold's Well lies on the north-eastern side of Maughold Head, some 500 feet above the sea. It was resorted to on the first Sunday of harvest, and an earlier account attributes a prolific quality to its water, noting that this had faded since the priests who kept the well were discontinued.

The parish held thirty-eight quarterlands of Lord's land. It contained the small freehold Barony of the Hough, of about 420 acres, and the barony formerly belonging to the priory of St Bees, north of the Dhoon river, which was exchanged with the Christian family for lands in Cumberland. The parish register begins in 1611, the earliest date of any in the Island after Malew. Ramsey lies within the parish and was listed separately as Ramsey Chapel. A fair was held at Maughold in August.
