Elizabeth I (1533-1603), Queen of England and Ireland from 1558 to 1603, whose Lord of Mann was one of her Garter knights.

Henry Stanley, fourth Earl of Derby and seventh Lord of Man of that house, succeeded his father in 1572. The Queen made him a Knight of the Garter, and he was at the head of the commission she sent into Flanders to treat of a peace with the Prince of Parma on behalf of the King of Spain. The Island was held by his family throughout her reign, by homage and by the service of rendering two falcons to the sovereign at each coronation, together with the patronage of the bishopric and all the ecclesiastical benefices, as fully as any of the former lords or kings of Man had held them.

The Stanley succession broke open at the end of her reign. Earl Ferdinando left three daughters, Anne who married Grey Bruges, Lord Chandos, Frances who married Sir John Egerton, afterwards Earl of Bridgewater, and Elizabeth who married Henry, Lord Hastings, and the dispute between them and their uncle William ran on past the Queen's death into the reign that followed.
