Richard Christian, whose passage to Virginia was claimed as a headright.

The Virginia land patents were granted in return for transporting settlers, fifty acres for each person brought in, and the patents list the people by name. Richard Christian's name stands in one such list, among some scores of others carried on the same account, so that his arrival in the colony is recorded not for his own sake but as part of another man's title to land.

The Manx Christians who went to Virginia are documented from a little later. In 1655 two brothers, William and Jonathan Christian of Maughold, went out, and a family of Cottiers from Lezayre went at the same time, the two families afterwards intermarrying. The Christians acquired considerable tracts of land in Virginia and their descendants came to be possessed of an ample fortune.
