A bank of coastal lime kilns at Scarlett, near Castletown, shown as working kilns on the Ordnance Survey 1:2500 scale map of 1869. The kilns processed limestone quarried from the adjoining Scarlett quarries, stone from which was used to build much of nearby Castletown, including Castle Rushen. Quarrying and lime-burning continued at Scarlett for many centuries, and the remains of the quarries, kilns and associated buildings survive on the shore, now within the Scarlett Nature Discovery Centre / Manx Wildlife Trust reserve.
